Put a Cork In It!

One of the rooms that I've been working the hardest to spruce up is my studio. This is because A: I spend a lot of time there and B: It's the only room in the house that is 100% mine. No need to ask for opinions before jazzing it up. I used to rent a studio space in a rickety old building downtown, but I've since consolidated it to this teeny room in the house. The room was looking a little dank and utilitarian, so I painted it a pretty gray color and have gotten to work adding some personality.

My first priority after painting was to put my inspiration board back up. Instead of just sticking the cork tiles to the wall like they were before, I decided to frame them with some old garage sale frames I had lying around. The project took all of 10 minutes, and it was free since I had all of this already. Just use the glass from the frames as a template for tracing out your cork, pop the cork in, and secure the back of the frame on. Voila!

Apothecary Take 2: Terrarium

Honestly, who doesn't need a terrarium in their life? I'm notorious for killing plants, so we'll see how these little beauties hold up.

What you need: a glass jar or bowl
                         rocks
                         succulents
                         charcoal (optional)

Just add the stones to the bottom of your vessel, sprinkle with a layer of charcoal (for odor control, I think), and then break up the roots of your plants as you add them in an eye pleasing arrangement. I know most people buy potting soil but honestly mine came with plenty of their own dirt.

Isn't it pretty?! For now it will live in my studio to cheer me up while working.

A close-up. I love all of the beautiful purple tones.

Quick Fix: Pet Food Storage

Did I mention that most of our storage solutions are very frat house chic right now? I got really fed up with the rolled up dog food bag in the corner, so I replaced it with a giant apothecary jar. Mom tested, puppy approved!

Welcome to the Messy Minimalist

Welcome to my journey of designing a beautiful home. My boyfriend and I live in a new construction town house (he bought it, go him!) which is currently furnished with a mishmash of college furniture and hand me downs. I have no experience with home decor, but I'm hoping that my aesthetic as a clothing designer will translate to the house. We will be DIYing, thrifting, and craigslisting our way to the sleek and clutter free space of our dreams. Along my quest for inspiration I've become quite obsessed with home decor blogs and I thought what the hell, I should chronicle this!
